Update Rollups for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013

Microsoft has made it a lot easier for customers to stay up to date with their Dynamics NAV 2013 systems: they’ve recently announced that regular platform and application rollups will be published for NAV 2013. This is amazing news and we have been waiting for this announcement for a long time! Let’s have a look at what this means and how you can benefit.

 Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013

Microsoft has previously released several hotfixes per week and it has been difficult to identify the hotfixes required for your individual system. The new rollups will now combine all previously released hotfixes and regulatory features. Applying those on a regular basis will keep your system up to date without having to apply hundreds of small hotfixes.

 

What comprises a ‘rollup’?

Rollups are a set of tested, cumulative hotfixes that are packaged together for easy deployment. Update rollups for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 include all application and platform hotfixes and regulatory features that have been released for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013. The latest released update rollup will always include all previous update rollups. It is recommend to install the latest update rollup to make sure your NAV system is up to date. 

The real benefit from a user perspective is the fact that your system will be up to the latest state and therefore you can prevent issues from happening. If there are known bugs in the application, you’ll have them resolved before they cause a major issue and interrupt your business. It usually takes a significantly more time to fix a problem after it has occurred and possibly caused problems in your already posted values than preventing this as early as possible. 

Let’s have a look what the rollups will include. There are two types:

Platform rollups (available for all NAV 2013 customers)

A platform hotfix is a package that includes all necessary application files which solve problems in the product and are cumulative. They will replace existing server and client files.

Application rollups (available only for specific countries)

Application hotfixes include code fixes that address problems in the Dynamics NAV functionality. We are awaiting the application rollups, which will become available to the Australian and New Zealand market very soon.

  

How to apply rollups

All rollups are available from Customer Source. (Please get in touch with us if you haven’t got access yet.) You will find more information about the releases and you can also download the files:

Applying the rollups into your environment will require technical assistance and code merge with your existing customisations through your Dynamics NAV partner. The compatibility with your current system environment will need to be checked carefully in advance. Please get in touch with us if you would like to benefit from the new functionalities. The latest rollup 4 was released 22nd July 2013. Further releases will be available on a monthly basis.
