The water is as important as the glass (or the content is as important as the container)

Intergen’s Web Redevelopment Project Part 5 It has been a while since my last website update instalment .  We ‘went live’ on September 13. When I say ‘went live’ I mean that this was the date when we were supposed to go live. Heck, we’d built a website; we’d tested and tested it; 75% of the content had been rewritten and was ready to copy and paste. All that remained to be done was to put all the actual content in. How hard could that trifling detail be, in the scheme of things? Build it and it (the content) will come. Cue Tui billboard. ... read full post

Taking it bird by bird: Writing content for the web

Intergen’s Web Redevelopment Project Part 4 I’ve been meaning to weigh in with an Intergen web redevelopment update for a couple of weeks now. The project itself is coming along nicely – today’s status report tells me we’re approximately 60% through development, with interface and production design 95% done. So that’s not the reason for me dragging the blog chain. ... read full post

Internet for good

We Live in Public – the cautionary tale of Josh Harris, the internet pioneer you’ve never heard of. Is it true that every innovation or modern invention has a drawback? That every silver lining has a cloud? In our industry and – closer to home – at Intergen, we talk a lot about how technology improves the daily lives of those around us. We look for tangible examples of how what we do makes a difference. I’m sure that’s true of most people, in most industries, not just IT. ... read full post

Designing the site: the KISS principle

Intergen's Web Redevelopment Project Part 3 As I mentioned a few weeks ago in an earlier post, there was nothing more reassuring to me than seeing the wireframes to our new site materialise. It was my first ‘a-ha’ moment in the project thus far, the first time I actually thought to myself, ‘Hey, we’re building a real live website here!’ ... read full post

A day of social media in the capital

As it so happened, on Wednesday I attended two – completely unrelated – social media events. The first was Tee Morris ’s Speak Geek to Me: Social Media in a Nutshell, held at Te Papa. The second was an afternoon of arm waving, head scratching and brainstorming at a Social Media BarCamp organised by Emma at Ideas Shop and hosted by the Massey University Department of Communication, Journalism and Marketing . ... read full post

From wish lists to whiteboards to wireframes

Intergen’s Web Redevelopment Project Part 2 (Previously entitled: How long is a piece of string?) We’re getting somewhere. We laid out the homepage wireframes which Michelle, our designer, has been working on and things started making sense. After weeks of numerous workshops and whiteboard sessions and a sometimes dizzying freeflow of ideas and suggestions, there’s nothing like seeing things laid out right in front of you and starting to become concrete. ... read full post

Clearing out the cupboard

Intergen’s Web Redevelopment Project Part 1 All my Christmases have come at once - Intergen is getting a new website. As a company whose stock and trade is making browsers browsable and creating ‘intelligent business’ online, it made sense for us to do for ourselves what we do for our clients: make one hell of a great web experience. ... read full post

Making waves offshore: Introducing ButtercupReader.net - the latest in accessibility online

Last month in the New Zealand Herald, Tony Stewart, our Managing Director, talked about some of the work Intergen does offshore and how these overseas engagements act as a salve in these challenging economic times. Late last year, Shaun Donaghey, our Auckland GM, talked to Metro magazine about how, with the time difference (and the exchange rate), being from ‘little old New Zealand’ can be turned into a distinct business advantage. ... read full post

Lessons learned in 2008... and plans for 2009

As a way of getting 2008 in review, we asked a few key Intergen staff members two questions: What’s the most important thing you personally learned in 2008? And, in light of this, what’s the one thing (if anything) you’ll be doing differently this year? ... read full post
