What does it mean to be an Expert?

Last week I attended a beer and sausage matching evening (thanks Island Bay Butchery and The Wellington Club).

Terry, who took the evening, is the number one sausage maker at one of the best butchers in Wellington. He was the subject matter expert in a room full of guys who all have cooked a few sausages in their day and sunk a few beers.

Terry displayed his expertise by making venison sausages in front of us while he discussed the finer points of good quality sausage – minimise moisture, just enough salt to bind, no breadcrumbs and fat for taste.

Terry was such an expert that not only is he a qualified New Zealand butcher, he has also spent nine months living and learning in Germany (the Home of Sausage) from a Master Sausage Maker. He has well and truly earned his Expert status.

So what does it mean to be a room with an expert? Firstly, they command the room. In this instance everyone wanted to hear what was being said. Secondly, they are happy to share their expertise, as Terry was – not just hints on how to make a sausage but also general butchery hints. And, thirdly, if appropriate, they bring in complementary experts – in this case the expert chefs of The Wellington Club. And it didn’t stop there – then we moved on to sharing tips on cooking (do you bake with some water in the bottom of the pan or steam then fry with water in the pan when cooking your sausages?).

Apart from having a great night drinking some Wellington-made craft beer and eating locally made sausages, it got me thinking about the qualities of an Expert. And it reminded me that Intergen is not the only organisation that has Experts. They exist in all walks of life; they have worked hard to earn their Expert status; they always have something worthwhile to say and purchasing from them is a sure way to be successful.
