Silverlight market share on the up

Have a look at Rich Internet Application Statistics site RIA Stats and you’ll see an interesting development: Microsoft Silverlight is now installed on more than 50% of computers connected to the web.

A freely available service, RIAStats.com “provides a publicly accessible and easily readable set of statics about the proliferation of Rich Internet Application (RIA) players.” While not an “official” service, per se, the site does provide indicative information that can be used for high-level decision making and better understand the dynamics of the RIA space.

While Adobe’s Flash player remains the clear leader, installed on all but 2.9 per cent of computers according to the site (where the plug-in has not been detected), version 3 of Microsoft’s Silverlight player is now on more than 54 per cent of computers. What’s also interesting is that the momentum of Sun’s Java player is starting to stall, with Silverlight biting at Java’s veritable heels.

So what does this mean? Doubts that enough people don’t have Silverlight installed are now dissipating. And with Silverlight 4 on the way, together with the benefits it provides, it’s likely that Silverlight’s market share will increase even further. No doubt MIX10, in Las Vegas from March 15-17, will highlight Silverlight’s capabilities even more.
