Day 2: WPC09

Postcard #3

The second day of the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference has ended. A few jaded looking faces this morning, but everyone seems to be out to see Steve Ballmer’s keynote. The keynote started with a video of the Day of Giving activities from the weekend, but unfortunately I wasn’t in it.

Bob Muglia (President, Server and Tools Business) covered off Microsoft’s servers, including a demo of moving a virtual server from one server to another while it was streaming a video. No interruption of the video which for me was about as impressive as server demonstrations get. There was also discussion and demonstrations around on-premise and off-premise cloud scenarios, and a great demonstration of using Excel 2010 for BI: 100,000,000 rows in an Excel spreadsheet and it was fast. All in all a good session. A bit on Azure, and the developer platform.

Then Steve Ballmer came on, who was a bit more energetic than at the WPC in Houston last year. He followed a similar format to last year, comprising a 20 minute talk followed by a Q&A session with a reporter from Fortune magazine. Key topics in his talk were:

  • Bing
  • Social Networking
  • The Economy

The term he used to describe the economic situation was that we have experienced an “Economic Reset”. Overall this was a good keynote, with positive feedback from everyone I spoke to.

From the keynote I went to various meetings and sessions. All in all a good day of updates.
